There are a few things to consider when creating a business card. You want to be tasteful, but make a point, an impression, a statement. When beginning the design for your card, first you want figure out what stock you want to go with. 12pt, 14pt, 16pt, metal, seed, etc. Next is the treatment you want to go with, which can be limited depending on the stock. Obviously you can't really do anything with the metal cards, but then again why would you need to?

Once you decide on the stock and treatment it's then onto the design. Do you want a photo or a flashy design, some foil stamping or just text? You've got to be sure to pick things that don't contrast each other too badly or your card will be hard to look at, or just plain ugly. If they blend together too well, no one will be able to even figure out what it says. You have to find a good middle ground. A nice font that's not 'plain' but not so intricate that it turns into a blur when it printed small enough to fit on a business card and that compliments the rest of the design.
